Thursday, September 24 — Faith Before the Proof

Faith is not certainty about the outcome. It is a decision you make while the outcome is still hidden.

Hebrews 11:1-2, 29-31 — KJV

Explanation

Hebrews was written to believers who were tired. The excitement had worn off, the pressure had not, and some of them were quietly considering going back to what was safer. So the writer does something pastoral and strategic: he takes them on a long walk through their own family history, naming person after person who kept going when going kept costing them something.

He starts with a definition. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Read that slowly. Faith is not a feeling that everything will work out. It is not optimism with a Bible verse attached. It is the settled decision to act on what God has said before you can see it, to treat God's word as solid ground while you are still standing on nothing else.

Then he lists examples, and our three land back-to-back in a way that is almost certainly intentional. Verse 29: the Red Sea, where a people walked into a seabed on nothing but a promise. Verse 30: Jericho's walls, which came down after a week of marching in silence around a city that was not moving — seven days of looking foolish before anything happened. Verse 31: Rahab, who did not perish with the disobedient, because she received the spies in peace.

Look at who she is standing beside. Abraham. Moses. Sarah. Joseph. The whole roll call of the faith. And there is a Canaanite woman with a reputation, listed by name, with no asterisk and no apology. Hebrews does not scrub her past out of the record. It leaves her name and her trade in the same sentence as her faith, because the point is not that she was respectable. The point is that she believed God when the people with far better résumés around her did not.

Notice, too, what Hebrews says she got right. She received the spies in peace. All the faith she had available to her that night was a willingness to welcome. She had no covenant, no scroll, no priest, no history with this God — only a rumor about a sea that parted and a growing conviction that the God behind it was the real one. She acted on the little light she had, and it was enough.

That matters if your faith feels thin right now. Some of us are waiting to feel certain before we obey, and certainty is not coming. Some of us are seven days into marching around a wall that has not budged, wondering whether we heard God at all. Hebrews says the elders obtained a good report not because they had unusual clarity but because they kept walking in the dark.

Sunday we will see the walls come down and Rahab walk out alive. Today is the part of the story before any of that is visible — the part where you have to decide what you will do with the little you know.

Faithful God, I want proof and You have offered me Your word. Help me act on what You have said while I am still waiting to see it. When the wall does not move on day six, keep me marching. Thank You that You count small faith that acts over big faith that only talks. Amen.
