Sunday, August 23 — Continue In What You Have Learned

The faith that will carry you through the hard years is usually the faith you learned before you understood it.

2 Timothy 3:10-11, 14-16 — KJV

10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, 11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Explanation

Here we are at Sunday, and Paul gives Timothy his marching orders in a single word. Continue. Or as the WEB puts it, remain. In a chapter where Paul has just warned that difficult times are coming and that many will drift, his charge to Timothy is not to reinvent himself but to stay put in what he already knows to be true. Continue in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you learned them.

That last phrase is the whole point of our week. Knowing from whom you learned them. Timothy's faith was not an abstract idea he picked up from a stranger. He learned it from people he trusted, from Lois and Eunice at home, and from Paul on the road. When the pressure came, part of what held him steady was the memory of the credible lives behind the message. It is harder to walk away from truth when you watched it lived out by people who loved you.

Then Paul reaches all the way back to the beginning. From infancy you have known the sacred writings which are able to make you wise for salvation. From a child. This is home training in its purest form. Before Timothy could reason or argue, Scripture was already being poured into him. His mother and grandmother did not wait until he was old enough to decide for himself. They gave him the word of God as a birthright. And Paul says those childhood Scriptures were able to make him wise unto salvation. What was planted in the nursery bore fruit in the mission field.

Paul crowns it with the great statement about Scripture itself. All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness. The book that shaped Timothy at home was not merely good advice. It was the living word of God, useful for every season of the journey. That is why it could hold him when everything else shook.

So the week comes full circle. We began with a protégé of promise and end with a charge to continue. The influence of a faithful home does not just start a person's journey. It gives them something to hold onto when the road gets hard. Whatever you learned from the faithful people in your life, and whatever the Scriptures planted in you early, do not drift from it now. Continue. Remain. Then hand it to someone else.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the truth that was planted in me before I could understand it. When times are hard and many drift, help me continue, help me remain. Thank You for Your word that makes me wise for salvation and equips me for every good work. Keep me faithful to what I have learned, and let it not stop with me. Amen.
