Tuesday, July 21 — Who Counts as Family
Jesus was preaching to a packed house when someone tapped Him on the shoulder, so to speak, and said, "Your family's outside." What He said back changed who gets to be called family.
Mark 3:31-35 — KJV 31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. 32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. 33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? 34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
Luke 11:27-28 — KJV 27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Explanation
At first glance these verses look like Jesus brushing off His own mother, and that can sit uncomfortably — especially in a week where we're honoring Mary. But look closer. Jesus isn't demoting Mary; He's expanding the definition of family so wide that people who felt like outsiders suddenly belong. And here's the beautiful part: by His own standard, Mary makes the cut better than anyone. Who did the will of God more faithfully than the woman who said, "Be it unto me according to thy word"?
In Mark, the crowd points to His biological relatives waiting outside. Jesus looks around the room — at fishermen, tax collectors, ordinary people leaning in to hear — and says these are my mother and my brothers, because whoever does the will of God is family. In the ancient world, where your bloodline decided your worth and your future, that was a radical reordering. He was saying the family of God is built not on genetics but on obedience and love.
Luke sharpens it. A woman shouts a blessing over Mary's body — essentially, "How lucky your mother is!" Jesus gently redirects: even more blessed are those who hear God's word and keep it. He's not diminishing Mary. He's telling that woman, and us, that the blessing everyone envies in Mary is available to anyone who will hear and obey.
This connects straight to Sunday. We tend to think Mary was blessed because of a one-time biological miracle. But Scripture keeps insisting she was blessed because she heard God's word and kept it — day after day, year after year, all the way to the cross. That's a blessing you and I can share.
Think about your own kitchen table. Some of the people who feel most like family to you don't share your last name — the church mother who checks on you, the coworker who prayed you through the hard year, the friend who shows up when blood relatives don't. And maybe some who do share your blood feel far away. Jesus isn't dismissing your family; He's telling you the household of God has room at the table for everyone willing to do the Father's will. If you've ever felt like you were standing outside, listen: doing God's will is the doorway in. You already belong.
Thought for the Day Family isn't only blood — it's everyone doing God's will.
Reflection Question Who has been family to you in the household of God, and have you told them lately?
Prayer Lord, thank You that Your family has room for us. When we feel like outsiders, remind us that the door in is simply doing Your will. Make us the kind of family to others that we've needed ourselves — present, faithful, and warm. Help us hear Your word and actually keep it. Amen.
