Sunday, September 27 — The One Name God Called Out

A whole city comes down, and in the middle of the wreckage God stops to name one woman and keep one promise.

6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD. 7 And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD. 8 And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns passed on before the LORD, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them. 9 And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets. 10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout. 11 So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp. 12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. 13 And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets. 14 And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days. 15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times. 16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city. 17 And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

The armed men went in front of them. The rear guard came after Yahweh's ark. The trumpets sounded as they went. 14 The second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. They did this six days. 15 On the seventh day, they rose early at the dawning of the day, and marched around the city in the same way seven times. Only on this day they marched around the city seven times. 16 At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, "Shout, for Yahweh has given you the city! 17 The city shall be devoted, even it and all that is in it, to Yahweh. Only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

Explanation

Six days of marching in silence around a city that does not move. That is most of this passage. No shouting, no strategy meetings, no visible progress — just a slow circle, priests and trumpets and an ark, while the people inside the walls watch and presumably laugh. Then on the seventh day they go around seven times, and Joshua finally gives permission to shout.

This is one of the strangest military operations in scripture, and that is the point. Israel does not take Jericho. God gives it. The instructions are built so that nobody walking away from that field could credit their own tactics. Verse 16 says it plainly: Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.

But the verse that should stop us is 17. In the middle of the hardest sentence in the chapter — the whole city devoted, everything in it — there is one exception, and it is a name. Only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

Read what God remembered. Not her résumé. Not a reformed life she had not had time to build yet. He remembered one night, one act of shelter, one scared woman who chose His people when it was dangerous to. Two spies made her a promise on a rooftop, and when the walls came down, that promise held. Her whole household — the father, the mother, the brothers, the sisters she had negotiated for — walked out of that city alive. She asked for mercy for her family, and she got every bit of it.

That is the compassion this week has been walking toward. It is not sentimental. It is specific. God knew her name, knew her reputation, knew exactly what she had done and who she had been, and He kept the promise anyway. Hebrews will later put her in the roll call of the faithful. James will name her alongside Abraham. Matthew will put her in the family tree of Jesus Christ Himself. The woman Jericho pushed to the wall ends up in the genealogy of the Savior.

So hear this wherever you are sitting today. If you have been carrying a past you assume God has not forgotten, you are right — He has not. He remembers the whole thing, and He is still calling your name out of the wreckage. If you have been marching around something for six days with no sign of movement, keep marching; the seventh day is not your job to arrange. And if you are the one who has been deciding who deserves a place at this table, look again at verse 17 and notice who God insisted on saving.

Rahab did not clean herself up and then get rescued. She was rescued, and then she got a whole new life — and a whole new family.

Prayer

Lord, You remembered Rahab by name in the middle of everything falling down. Remember me. Where I have been marching without seeing anything move, give me the strength for one more day. Where I have written somebody off, change my heart. Thank You that the story ends with an outsider inside Your family. Amen.
