Thursday, July 23 — Yes Before You Understand
An angel shows up in a small town and tells a teenage girl her whole life is about to change in a way she never asked for. What she says next is one of the bravest sentences in the Bible.
Luke 1:26-38 — KJV 26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing shall be impossible. 38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

There will be no end to his kingdom." 34 Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?" 35 The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God. 36 Behold, Elizabeth your relative also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For nothing spoken by God is impossible." 38 Mary said, "Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.
Explanation
Mary was probably a teenager, engaged but not yet married, living in a town so unremarkable people joked about it. She had a plan: marry Joseph, build a quiet life. Then Gabriel walks in and hands her a future she never requested — one that could cost her that engagement, her reputation, maybe her safety. An unmarried pregnancy in that world was not a minor complication.
Watch how she responds, because it's a model of honest faith. First she's troubled — she doesn't fake calm. Then she asks a real question: "How shall this be?" That's not doubt; that's a thoughtful person trying to understand. Gabriel answers not with a full explanation but with a reminder of who God is: the Holy Spirit will handle what you can't, and "with God nothing shall be impossible." And then Mary says it: "Be it unto me according to thy word."
Sit with what that sentence costs. She says yes before she understands how it will work. She doesn't wait for the mechanics to make sense or for the risks to disappear. She hears the character of God, trusts it, and surrenders. This is the heart of Sunday's lesson — living with what you didn't ask for. Mary didn't ask to be the mother of the Messiah. It wasn't on her vision board. But when God asked, she made room in her life for a plan bigger than her own.
Here's where it meets you. Some of the most defining things in your life are things you never asked for. The child with extra needs. The job loss that redirected everything. The caregiving role that landed on you. The calling you'd have skipped if given the choice. We don't get to script our lives the way we think we will. But we do get to decide how we answer when God says, "This is yours now."
Mary shows us the answer doesn't require having it all figured out. It requires trusting the One doing the asking. You can be troubled and still say yes. You can have questions and still surrender. Faith isn't the absence of "how" — it's saying "be it unto me" before the "how" is clear. What's your unasked-for assignment? And can you trust God's character enough to say yes to it today?

Prayer Lord, we admit we like to understand before we obey. Give us Mary's courage to say yes to You before the "how" makes sense. When life hands us what we didn't choose, help us trust Your character enough to make room for Your plan. Be it unto us according to Your word. Amen.
